To the Editor:

I am writing to applaud Stacey Schultz’s Health article, "No miracle cure" (August 10).

Too many times, the media portrays the "alternative" sites Schultz describes in a favorable light, despite the complete lack of scientific evidence to back their claims. Newspapers and magazines often write about these sites and their assertions in features that downplay any objective look at the facts and instead focus on the "human interest" viewpoint.

But when it comes to our health, the facts should be the main "human interest." I’m glad to see that former Surgeon General Koop agrees, as does Ms. Schultz. As she said, "What we need is a skeptical eye…" I applaud her for applying that skepticism to a subject that is sorely in need of it.

Sincerely,

David Bloomberg
